Opening Ceremony of the Basic Mandarin Communication Class for Kelantan State Assembly Members
The Basic Mandarin Communication Class, organized by the International Language Institute (IBA-KIAS), is specifically designed for the Kelantan State Assembly Members (ADUN). Its aim is to introduce the fundamentals of Mandarin communication to participants who are ADUN members, enhancing their ability to communicate in Mandarin, one of the main languages used by the Chinese community in the state. The program also plans to conclude with a closing ceremony at Jinan University in Guangzhou, China, following the completion of classroom sessions at KIAS.
On October 8, 2024, the opening ceremony of the Basic Mandarin Communication Class began with the arrival of participants at 2:30 PM, followed by the arrival of the Chairman of the Government Supporters Club, YB Dato Abdul Rahman Yunus, and subsequently YB Kamaruzaman Mohamad, representing YB Dato’ Haji Wan Roslan Wan Hamat, Chairman of the Kelantan State Committee on Education, Higher Education, Green Technology, Digital, and Innovation, and Chairman of the Board of Directors of KIAS Darulnaim Sdn. Bhd., who was invited to deliver the opening speech.
In his speech, YB Kamaruzaman Mohamad emphasized the importance of this program in enhancing the basic Mandarin communication skills of the ADUN members. He noted that, from a geopolitical standpoint, Mandarin is equally important as English today. Furthermore, it strengthens both local and international relations and reflects the state government’s effort to expand the mastery of international languages among its leaders.
He also expressed his appreciation to BBC and KIAS for their initiative in organizing this pioneering program. He recalled that the idea for this program was originally inspired by the late Tan Sri Dato’ Bentara Setia Tuan Guru Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat, who laid the foundation for the Malay Muslim community in this state to learn Mandarin, facilitating efforts in preaching, communication, and trade.
The ceremony concluded with the presentation of a Mandarin communication class kit to participants as a reference, along with souvenirs given to the honored guests as a token of appreciation. The success of this program is hoped to contribute to improving international language skills among state leaders and to strengthen diplomatic and social relations at both the local and international levels.
